The medication refers to tricyclic antidepressants and it is purposed for the treatment of depressions, phobic or obsessional disorders, and also cases of cataplexy associated with narcolepsy.

Anafranil SR (the active ingredient clomipramine) represents sustained release tablets. They release clomipramine gradually throughout the day; the latter interferes with serotonin and noradrenaline (nerve cells responsible for alternations of mood) being reabsorbed back into the nerve cells therefore making the general state and mood better and relieving depression.

The mode of administration presupposes the medication to be taken one time a day on a regular schedule advisably before going to bed. No transformation should be made to the sustained release tablets; they should be consumed whole. The medication takes sometimes quite a long time to produce any results and therefore should be taken during the whole period of therapy. Any termination should be discussed with the doctor. Do not stop taking the medication rapidly for fear of having abstinence symptoms. Alcohol should be excluded for the time of the therapy.

The medication should be given with extreme care to elderly people and young people under 18 years of age, patients with liver or kidney illness, hypotension, history of epilepsy and urinary retention; and some others. The medication is forbidden in the following cases: provided you have allergy to clomipramine or other tricyclic antidepressants, if you have any problems with heart, hypokalaemia, glaucoma and else. Pregnant women should consult a doctor before taking the remedy; nursing ones are prohibited to take it.

The drug has a number of adverse effects among them are sleepiness, dry mouth, constipation, urination problems and many others. Their appearance is highly individualized and can be affected by the additional medications that you take. Therefore consider the remedies with the pharmacist, especially MAOIs, SSRI antidepressants, other tricyclic antidepressants, warfarin and others.
