Sharp pain is pain caused by different traumas. It commonly has reversible reason and may demand short term treatment of the causing problem. In comparison with sharp pain, chronic pain results from states which are hard to diagnose and generally they require a long time treatment. Chronic pain is classified by such examples as neuropathy, referred pain or cancer. Commonly pain persists even if the reason of its occurrence or the injury that caused it has already been cured. In these cases, the pain is usually treated separately from its cause. The aim of treatment is to cure the pain but not to deal with the reasons which triggered it (for example, the reason has been managed or can't be detected).

Pain is commonly treated with the help of multidisciplinary technology which includes pharmacologic treatment (analgesics, as NSAID remedies or narcotics, pain killers, anticonvulsants or tricyclic antidepressants), non-pharmacologic treatment (physical therapy, interventional procedures, sportive exercises, applying heat and/or ice), and psychological treatment (cognitive therapy and biofeedback). Some doctors pay more attention to pharmacological treatment and others prefer the interventional treatment of pain.
