It's a preparation of an antiviral medication referring to the group of nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) and intended for prevention of HIV cells from spreading and growing. Generic name of the medicine is lamivudine. Another brand name is Epivir. It is taken in combination with other remedies of the same purpose for better efficiency as the administration of only one anti-HIV medication makes the virus resistant to it very soon. It does not cure HIV or AIDS.

Refrain from taking the medicine provided it evokes intolerance response in you. An enlarged liver, abnormal liver function tests, or high levels of lactic acid in the blood, diabetes, hepatitis C, hepatitis delta, nerve damage; current therapy with zalcitabine, emtricitabine, or another medicine containing lamivudine, and any intolerance reactions should be considered before taking the medication. If you are in the state of pregnancy make your doctor aware of it; breast-feeding is forbidden when taking the drug and it is generally forbidden to women with AIDS or HIV. It is crucial to be careful while combining the medication with other drugs without doctor's consideration. This refers especially to interferon alfa, ribavirin and zalcitabine

The drug should be taken on a regular basis. The recommended dosage is 150 mg twice a day either with or without a meal and also with other antiretroviral drugs. A full course should be competed in order for the medication to produce its effect. Do not make up for the left out dose taking two pills at once. Be careful giving it to kids and elderly people. Do not dispose of medications in wastewater.

Mind that the treatment with the medicine does not guarantee that HIV won't transfer to another person during sexual contact. The medication can have adverse effects like nausea, vomiting, headaches, and rare cases of hair loss. More serious adverse effects are conditions of pancreatitis, lactic acidosis and severe hepatomegaly with steatosis. Overweight patients are more liable to have ill-effects.
