The main purpose of the medication (generic name is tacrolimus) is that it doesn't allow liver, kidney, or heart transplant to be rejected. In this case it is usually used in combination with some other drug. This is a preparation of immunosuppressant and it functions by barring the activity of certain blood cells therefore interfering with the rejection.

The mode of administration presupposes the medication to be taken according to your prescription no longer than needed and not exceeding the necessary amount. The capsules are normally taken with the interval of 12 hours. It is recommended to abstain from grapefruit products during the time of the therapy.

Contraindicative factors may be your allergic response to the compounds of Prograf, the therapy with astemizole, cisapride, dofetilide, NSAIDs, ibutilide, a potassium-sparing diuretic, sirolimus, terfenadine, or ziprasidone or cyclosporine (the latter with the last 24 hours). Doctor's approval is needed in the cases when you are or planning to become pregnant or if you are breast-feeding, provided you have liver or kidney illness, diabetes, high potassium levels in your blood and etc. Be careful combining the remedy with other prescribed or over-the-counter drugs for fear of their unexpected interaction.
