Generic name of the medicine is didanosine. It's a preparation of a nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitor that is intended for prevention of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cells from spreading and growing. The drug is not a remedy for HIV or AIDS. It also does not guarantee that HIV won't transfer to another person during sexual contact.

Contraindications: intolerance to Videx EC Delayed-Release Enteric-Coated Capsules; pancreas problems, an enlarged liver, abnormal liver function tests, or lactic acidosis, current therapy with allopurinol or ribavirin. Problems with liver, heart, kidneys or liver, gallstones, nerve problems (neuropathy), high blood cholesterol or lipid levels, or high blood amylase levels, if you are overweight - all these conditions should be considered before taking the medication. If you are in the state of pregnancy make your doctor aware of it; breast-feeding is forbidden when taking the drug and it is generally forbidden to women with AIDS or HIV. Be careful with alcohol beverages and refrain from unprotected sex. It is crucial to be careful while combining the medication with different drugs and equally important not to take it simultaneously with allopurinol, aluminum salts, azole antifungals, delavirdine, HIV protease inhibitors, lithium, quinolones, tetracyclines, hydroxyurea, methadone, stavudine, and some others for fear of their dangerous interaction.

Videx EC represents delayed-release enteric-coated capsules and should be taken on a regular basis with water on an empty stomach at least an hour before or 2 hours after a meal. Do not make any transformation to the pills. In order to gain the most effect from the treatment the drug is frequently prescribed in a complex with other medicines. Do not make up for the left out dose taking two pills at once. Be careful using the medication in elderly people.
