Abacavir under a brand name Ziagen represents nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitor and is purposed for the treatment of HIV infection. It functions by interfering with the virus so that is doesn't spread so fast. It does not cure HIV or AIDS.

Contraindications: hypersensitivity to the drug and have liver or heart problems of any kind, and some others. If you are in the state of pregnancy make your doctor aware of it; breast-feeding is forbidden when taking the drug and it is generally forbidden to women with AIDS or HIV.

The drug should be taken on a regular basis; the instruction label strictly followed. Even if you have the improvement of your symptoms do not quit the therapy. Do not make up for the left out dose taking two pills at once. The remedy should be given with extreme caution to elderly people and children; it is prohibited to kids younger than 3 months of age. It is crucial to be careful while combining the medication with different drugs and quite important not to take it simultaneously with methadone.

Be careful with alcohol beverages and refrain from unprotected sex. Mind that the treatment with the medicine does not guarantee that HIV won't transfer to another person during sexual contact. There is a possibility that treatment with the medication during the pregnancy period reduces the chance of the child inheriting HIV.
